The Warden

The Warden by Anthony Trollope, first published in 1855, is the inaugural novel in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Set in the fictional cathedral town of Barchester, it centers on Reverend Septimus Harding, a gentle and well-liked clergyman who serves as the warden of Hiram’s Hospital, an almshouse for elderly laborers. The hospital's income, originally intended for the bedesmen, has been diverted over time, providing Harding with a comfortable income. When reformer John Bold challenges this arrangement, a public dispute ensues, questioning the ethics of the church and charity.
