It is the late nineteenth century and a sum of $10,000 has been stolen from the railroad, and a clerk named Maroney who has a penchant for the horses, is prime suspect. After the railroad hires the South's best detectives to tail Maroney who find nothing they turn to the north and the man synonymous with detection: Allan Pinkerton himself, the head of the world's first modern detective agency. Pinkerton virtually invented and formalized undercover detective work and has a large fleet of skilled operatives.

He sends his best agent, Porter, to get to the truth.
