Rural Roots to Harvard: A journey of Learning, Challenges and Success’ by Jarnail Singh (IAS) is an enduring tale of how determination, discipline and sincerity coupled with hard work trumps all odds to see the author reach the pinnacle of success. The book traces his journey from his humble beginnings in 1954 at a rural school in a remote village in Punjab, to his completing his engineering studies with distinction, and joining the coveted Indian Administrative Service (IAS) through dint of sheer hard work. He was posted in the remote hill areas of Manipur, where his work was recognised and admired by all. He later pursues a Master’s in Public Administration at Harvard University in the US. Jarnail Singh has held significant positions in the Central Government, including as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (1996–2004), and also served as Chief Secretary of Manipur (2004–2008). Singh has four books to his credit, and this is his fifth.
