Raymond Chandler’s favourite novel introduces us to an unusual character. Mr Bowling is a serial killer and buys newspapers after committing a murder in order to see if the death has been reported. But his reason for killing, however, is because he wishes to be caught, and to be hanged.

Then he meets Alice – daughter of a vicar and a devout herself – with whom he falls in love. But is redemption possible for a serial killer?
