Book Overview
Loal Kashmir is a powerful and intimate collection of sixteen true-life narratives that explore themes of love, longing, and loss in the conflict-ridden region of Kashmir. Drawing its title from the Kashmiri word “Loal”—which means love and affection—this book delves into what it means to yearn for connection in a place where communication is often severed by political unrest and military lockdowns.
Through stories of lovers separated by borders, curfews, and bureaucratic walls, author Mehak Jamal offers a rare and deeply human perspective on the Kashmir Valley. From a love letter intercepted during a military crackdown to moments of quiet resistance in homes filled with tear gas, these accounts illuminate the private struggles of those trying to hold on to love amidst chaos.
At its core, Loal Kashmir is not just about romantic love—it’s about the resilience of the human spirit and the small acts of tenderness that survive even in the harshest of realities. By capturing these emotional truths, the book helps fill a critical gap in the public narrative around Kashmir: the lived experiences of its people.
