Gitanjali is a collection of lyrical poems originally composed in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore. The word ‘Gitanjali’ combines ‘Geet’ (song) and ‘Anjali’ (offering), meaning “an offering of songs.” While Tagore was influenced by Sufi mysticism and Vaishnav poetry, his emotional expression does not merely imitate these traditions. His love for humanity subtly transforms into a deeper love for the divine. He did not perceive God as a human-like entity; for him, love is the beginning and the divine is the ultimate end. It would be insufficient to say that Gitanjali is purely mystical in tone—it also challenges the value systems of medieval poets with sharp critique. Yet, the dominant theme remains one of surrender. This work is a deeply spiritual and inquisitive creation, reflecting Tagore’s quest for the divine through profound introspection and poetic devotion.
