Headless Halloween

Frozen in silence, I squinted into the eerie pale light. Suddenly, hands began to emerge from beneath the ground, shaking off dirt and stretching upward. One after another, a dozen hands poked through the soil, shimmering yellow and green in the moonlight. Then came the heads—human heads—hair matted with earth, skin loose and hanging from their skulls. “Take me with you,” one of them called in a dirty whisper.
