Half Girlfriend follows Madhav, a Hindi‑speaking Bihari boy from a middle‑class background who enrolls at the prestigious St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, where he falls deeply in love with Riya, an affluent, confident city girl. Though Madhav proposes to her, Riya declines, insisting they remain friends, yet she eventually agrees to be his “half girlfriend,” a term that reflects the complicated, modern nature of their relationship. Set across Bihar, Delhi, and New York, the novel explores Madhav’s struggles with language, class differences, and urban sophistication as he tries to win Riya’s heart. Blending themes of aspiration, love, and cultural contrast, Chetan Bhagat presents a unique contemporary romance that goes beyond typical love‑at‑first‑sight stories, enriched with vivid depictions of Patna and New York. The book, available in multiple languages, was also planned for a Bollywood adaptation directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Ekta Kapoor and Bhagat himself, further highlighting the popularity of Bhagat, one of India’s best-selling English-language authors.
