Don Juan (Penguin Classics) is a literary masterpiece that chronicles the adventures of Don Juan. The story begins with Don Juan's illicit affair at the age of sixteen in Spain and his forced relocation to Italy to be under the care of a tutor. He survives a shipwreck and reaches Greece, where he is sold as a slave. from Greece, he reaches Russia and becomes a hot favourite with Empress Catherine, who sends him to England.
The book is written in ottova riva stanza form. It is a blend of high drama combined with a dose of earthy humour, making an outrageous satire of his contemporaries and a sharp mockery of western societies. The edition includes a new and substantially longer introduction which dwells on the mythology of Don Juan. The extensive annotation covers selected variant headings, points of interest and historical allusions woven into the poem.
