Changing Track

Changing Track follows Léon Delmont, a businessman traveling on a train from Paris to Rome to surprise his lover. As the journey proceeds, he reflects on past decisions, questions his identity, and ruminates on the nature of change. Through impressions of the passing landscape, encounters with fellow passengers, and recurring themes, the novel becomes a psychological case study of an “everyman.” Originally published in 1957 and awarded the Prix Renaudot, the novel is noted for its experimental style—written in the second person—to immerse the reader in the protagonist’s mindset.
