Description
When Vernon-Smith, the Bounder of the Remove, dropped a bombshell by announcing that he was going to cut the Courtfield soccer match, Harry Wharton, Captain of the Remove, was in a spot. Strong opposition from his form-mates forced Smithy to change his mind, but by then Wharton was too angry to take him on again. That set the team against their captain, and several refused to play in the match, which was how Billy Bunter stepped into the team. Not unnaturally, Greyfriars suffered a resounding defeat. That led Harry Wharton to resign from the captaincy of the form and Smithy, with Bunter's help (sic), was voted into his place. Just how popular he became in that elevated position was proved when a bag of flour sailed out of Smithy's study window at Mr. Quelch, the Remove master. And with the framing of Vernon-Smith, Bunter found himself in a most uncomfortable predicament.
