Description
Lord Mauleverer started the trouble, because when he heard that his uncle had been knocked down by a car, he obtained permission to miss lessons and visit him. Naturally enough, Billy Bunter thought this was a cracking good idea, so he rubbed his eyes with an onion to produce tears and asked Quelch for leave because his mother was ill.
Unfortunately, Bunter did not sufficiently conceal the onion, and was sent to Quelch's study to await a caning; there, he hid the manuscript of Quelch's History of Greyfriars in the chimney. Then, by an odd coincidence, Bunter's father telephoned to say that his mother was really ill, and before he could be caned, Bunter bolted home.
Meanwhile, Vernon-Smith had a score to settle with Quelch, and when the manuscript was found to be missing, the Bounder was suspected. The whole class was kept in for Extra School until the History reappeared, and the Remove grew more and more rebellious – until Bunter returned.
Then the suspicion of his being the prime cause of all this discomfort grew, and once again Bunter was up to his eyes in trouble.
