Bunter was stuck in the form room having to do lines when an opportunity to escape presents itself. All he had to do was pretend to be Lord Mauleverer. But he soon discovers the pitfalls of that impersonation. For Mauleverer, apart from being a schoolboy earl, is also owner of a rare collection of antiquities including the apparently priceless scarab that seems to have a mystery. Bunter is now terrified when he finds that far from being taken to a sumptuous tea as the guest of the rich Konstantinos Kalizelos, as he had thought, he was in fact being kidnapped. He escapes but this is just the beginning. Thus begins a series of skirmishes and adventures between Kalizelos and the schoolboys with the trail winding its way all across Egypt as everybody seeks the secret of the scarab.
