Description
Poor Bunter was in the worst possible situation! He had jolly well got to work for a scholarship if he wanted to stay on at Greyfriars, because his father had to make up a little matter of 5,000, which belonged to a client of his, and which had disappeared along with his chauffeur. The chauffeur, Triggs by name, was supposed to collect Bunter and his friends of the Remove for a half-holiday drive to the sea. But he never arrived – he absconded with the £5,000 worth of bonds instead. Meanwhile Vernon-Smith, the Bounder of the Remove, had planned his own half-holiday; he went for a picnic on Popper's Island, which was out of bounds and had been rented from Sir Hilton Popper by a very aggressive, bearded camper.
When the car failed to turn up at Greyfriars to take Bunter and Co. off to the sea, they decided to join Vernon-Smith, and eventually came to blows with Sir Hilton's tenant, which led to a most undignified punishment! Vernon-Smith, however, wasn't going to take a beating lying down, and his revenge had the happy result of saving Bunter an awful lot of hard work.
