Bernard Finch has come a long way from his small-town American roots. Bernard had some trouble in college so he flew to Europe where he enjoyed an agreeable life in Rome. That is until his lover and protector died leaving Bernie penniless. It was time to re-invent himself. Now he is a man transformed. Helped by Lady Enid an English aristocrat in need of a husband Bernie passes for an Englishman. He is the doyen of culture vultures and a celebrated lecturer on Aegean cruises. Which is where - oh no! - his old college chum Frankie Gleeson comes back into his life. Frankie has made his fortune in corn snacks and to celebrate his success he brings his wife Nola to cruise the Greek islands. Frankie may not know his Ionians from his Cyclades but he has the gift of total recall of every detail of Bernard's early years. Frankie is a simple man whose friendship isn't easily thrown off even aboard a liner as capacious as the Golden Memories.
