Description
Hiran, born in 1857—the year of the great Mutiny and his father’s death—is brought to Calcutta by his widowed mother, where he discovers his only remarkable talent: an uncanny ability to read a man’s fate from his palm. Fortune leads him to a job at an auction house, drawing him into a shadowy trade and the sinister orbit of his superior, the infamous Mr. Jonathan Crabbe. Tasked with procuring a child for Crabbe’s opium-addicted wife, Hiran unwittingly steps into a future fraught with peril. From rebellion and war to storms at sea, love, intrigue, fraud, and dark dealings, this unlikely hero—the opium clerk—finds himself swept into a world of danger and destiny.
