Somewhere in the darkness, a black wolf is feeding. Several weeks earlier, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec and his team had uncovered and stopped a domestic terrorist attack in Montréal, arresting the perpetrator known as the Black Wolf. But their relief is short-lived, as Gamache realizes that the horrific plot may have been just the beginning—or even a deliberate misdirection that allowed a deeper, more dangerous conspiracy to grow. Haunted by the possibility that the real Black Wolf is still at large, spreading lies and division, Gamache, still recovering from his wounds, is confined to the village of Three Pines while leading a covert investigation. In a quiet church basement, he and his senior agents Beauvoir and Lacoste pore over the scant evidence: two notebooks, cryptic numbers on a tattered map of Québec, and a mysterious warning repeated by the Grey Wolf. They soon recognize that the Black Wolf must have powerful allies across law enforcement, industry, organized crime, and government. From the apparent peace of his village, Gamache finds himself drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse with an invisible foe who is gathering forces and preparing to strike.
