Description
Our first struggle for independence did not begin in 1857.
In reality, tribal uprisings against the British started at least 75 years before the 1857 revolution. These battles were fought with traditional bows, arrows, and spears, long before the political movements of the late nineteenth century were documented.
As we mark 75 years of independence today, it is important to acknowledge that, parallel to the mainstream freedom movement recorded in history books, there was a simultaneous struggle for freedom unfolding in our remote villages and forests.
*The Great Tribal Warriors of India* is a humble effort to honor the unsung heroes of this movement, whose contributions largely went unrecognized. The book begins with Tilka Manjhi, who initiated guerrilla warfare against the British. It also features Jaipal Singh Munda, a vigilant leader of the movement and one of the influential speakers in the Constituent Assembly. These brave warriors came from all corners of India—including the Northeast and South—and represented diverse tribal communities across the country.
This book is a rare compilation that showcases the journey of our self-discovery as a civilization striving to become a nation.
